A New Horizon in Thin-Film Technology: Graphene

One of the most promising solutions in thin-film technology is graphene – a form of carbon in which atoms form a flat sheet one atom thick, arranged in a chicken wire-like formation. It is incredibly strong, almost transparent, and has very high conductivity – better than silicon and rivaling copper.

The 2010 Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to scientists at the University of Manchester for their work on graphene sheets peeled from blocks of graphite. Widespread use of graphene technology will require new techniques for large-scale manufacturing – an area of very active research.10
